The Road Less Travelled

The path before me;
It’s winding back and forth
No straight steps, just stumbles
Tumbles, and falls.
Pebbles beneath me knees
Dirt covering my palms

I lay here, still and quiet
Listening to the subtle rustle
Of forest birds and cricket calls
As they sing to the setting sun
Hailing the approaching dark
As the day settles down, all done.

The path before me;
It’s shrouded in gray shadows;
devoured by the hungry darkness.
The dense canopy of turning leaves
hides the pale light of the moon
from my tired eyes, full of grief.

I am lost in loss here, without
the tether to Reality, which
keeps me grounded here
upon this road less taken
of dreams and nightmares
from which I’ll never awaken.
